It's very hard for ppl without previous background to join the buy-side from beginning. The best reference book is Joe Kan's "the insiders guide to Best jobs on Bay Street"

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Normally you start from either sell-side (both large firm or boutique), independent research firms (small sector though), or rating agencies (S&P, Moody's, DBRS, Fitch). A few ppl also worked for accounting firms (e.g. Big Fool) or Consulting firms at first, then move to either sell-side or buy-side.

I think you are well-prepared in terms of Accounting background and industry experiences. If your writing skill and verbal communication skill are excellent, you could try applying for Equity Research Associate at those broker-dealers.

Pick a stock; do a valuation including Comps & a DCF model; write up one-page (the same layout as those sell-side reports) and tell the reader your analysis and recommendation.

Networking with ppl in the industry and approaching analysts directly. Initiative is always highly appreciated! Sending your research sample to the analysts with your Resume and a cover letter, cold-call everybody one week later after sending out e-mails (ppl are busy, they may not reply your e-mail, but may spend 10 minuted talking with on phone).

If ppl agree to have a coffee with you, always prepare some good stock pitches. Tell them what stock you recommend them to buy or sell, give them THREE points on why. Be prepared, no bullshit, no babbling, just give ppl enough information to answer their questions.\

Good luck!更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

  • Any idea to look for suitable position with CFA Level III?
    • Would you mind introduce your background a bit then others can give more specific, targeted feedback...
      • I have Canadian Investment Manager designation and passed CFA level III. Wanna begin my career in the fianncial industry. 5 yrs telecommunication company experiences , MCSE , and Bachelor Degree of Engineering(not from Canada)
        • You shall look into opportunities in US. Telecom is suffering right now, at least US has more chances than Canada.
          • What do you mean?
        • What kind of job in financial industry do you want?
          • Not so clear right now.Plan to be investment analyst first, but the reality is probably impossible.Need more suggestions if you have.
            • you might want to chat with friends in the financial institution or financial service industry and get a sense of what positions the company normally has and what are the requirements and compensation for each position.
Agency would also be a good resource.
              • Which agency do you know?
                • Sorry, my agent is not in town. Maybe other folks can provide more information.
