I wish to start as a treasury analyst

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I wish to start as a treasury analyst, for sure senior position is better but if experience is highly stressed I won't mind start at low. Question is: Is it possible to get in - I tried a few application though never got interview.

Right now I'm working at back office in investment industry, ever hoped to get into middle/front office but the way things are now there is little chance. I never wanted to be a security analyst as it is not only boring/tough/a lot to read to write to present to sell (your ideas/reports), and it is no different to gambling unless you hit the jackpot becoming a star analyst (so what you making $20 million a year? - yeah that's the top analyst in Wall Street in a good year) Analysts do not general profits per se, their research results can be used as soft dollar at most if you are on the sell side, and if you are lucky enough to be on the buy side then you better produce some really great ideas for portfolio managers to adopt - and endosed by the market - or else you are done no matter how hard you work - who cares you work 70hrs or 100hrs a week - boss needs positive results.

How about becoming a trader? Yeah, no dice - how many Chinese out there working as a trader for a big investing firm/bank? Don't mention M/A or underwriting, those jobs require big networking/sales skills rather than finance knowledge itself - forget about CFA - everybody has that if not the Charter at least some level passed - you drop a thing from above in downtown Toronto, chances are it'll hit a CFA charterholder or candidate.

Got a lot to say, but I've decided to look into treasury area as it makes more sense more down to the earth compare with all shitty stories wall/bay street try to sell or tell.

Wish I could get some insider advise on landing a treasury job - much appreciated更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

        • getting into the industry normally needs 'networking' and 'luck', but the timing is really bad the way things are now
Treasury also values this certificate
            • en.
            • agree! :)
            • True. But again, you better get into 'treasury' to begin with. Still hard to get in with only a CFA title (if not companying with treasury experience)
              • CFA charter is not a must for ppl work in Treasury field, but it is definately a plus.
                • oh REALLY? cool!
            • Treasury job: 99% for Balance Sheet?
              • Cash flow.
                • Where does Cash Flow come from?
                  • A/R A/P ya... and company's CF projection
                    • Well, that's Balance Sheet.
                  • WC management, ST & LT financing
                    • y: Current Asset, Liability.
You know, I was reading tons of statements, different industries and companies in different countries, whole day long yesterday. So I was thinking during working out: what we say "Finance" are actually 80-90% relating to the Balance Sheet (B/S, yes, that's it!), 10-20% about the I/S. All other business activities, operation/marketing/strategy etc etc, are about I/S.

Then, when I looked at piles of statements last night, all of a sudden, I realized that basically almost everything, except those purely creative stuffs for non-material usage, could be described and included somewhere in the Balance Sheet and Income Statement. :)

                      Interesting.
                      • 做risk analysis么?还是investment analysis..
                        • International companies usually hedge foreign investment by future, swap or option. Interest rate also need to be hedged againest the market volatility. Anyway, risk management is usually used in a big company with oversea operation.
:) // 不过treasury analyst 也分很多种, 负责banking, cash management的就比较junior, assist in risk management / financing / FI pricing & valuation/ M&A 就属于senior TA, 看你希望做什么了.
              • I wish to start as a treasury analyst

                • You WISH?
                  • your point?
                    • I guess you want to say you HOPE (or WANT, PLAN) to start as a treasury analyst, right?
                      • If I use 'hope' or 'want' or 'plan', could you get me a reference? :-)
                        • You could have much better odds landing a decent job if you use some improvements on communication skills.
                          • communication skills like what?
                            • hoho.
                • My two cents
和美国比起来, treasury type of jobs in Canada真的是少的可怜.

                  2. CFA charter is not a must for ppl work in treasury field, but it is definately a plus. Treasury的工作 虽然属于finance, 可Treasury部门还是falls under CFO's umbrella. 而负责FI pricing & valuation, risk management, M&A 的Director 则是CFA + MBA, 他下面请的analyst也是CFA + MBA.

                      • Thanks
                  • FI pricing & valuation, risk management, M&A 一般都是MBA (with a focus on Finance)才学的,所以找这种背景的就不奇怪了。
                    • CPA + CFA is preferred. :)
                        • CA + CFA in Canada; CPA + CFA in the States. :)
              • FRM should be the best designation in the field of risk management.
