More broadly, the term can include alcoholic beverages created from other fruits and even vegetables and grains. Such potables are usually specified with the name of the fruit, as in "apricot wine." Wine has a rich history that has evolved along with that of man. Its historical roots reach back almost 12,000 years. As various cultures spread out into new parts of the world, so did the grapevine and the art of winemaking. Today there are vineyards throughout the world with good wine being produced in far-ranging locations from the United States to South Africa to Australia to South America to Europe. Wine is broadly classified in the following categories: 1. still (nonsparkling) wines-including red, white, and rosé-which can be dry (nonsweet), semisweet, and sweet; 2. sparkling wines, including French champagnes as well as effervescent wines from other parts of the world; 3. fortified wines (such as sherry, port, and some dessert wines), which have been augmented with brandy or other spirit; and 4.       1. Any wine that is not fortified or sparkling. 2. In the United States the official definition is a wine that contains a minimum of 7 percent alcohol and a maximum of 14 percent. This definition does not define quality in any way, although some connote table wine with lower-quality, inexpensive wine. That's a mistake because many wines that simply say "Red Table Wine" or "White Table Wine" are excellent and not at all inexpensive. 3. European synonyms for table wine include Germany's deutscher tafelwein, France's vin de table, and Italy's vino da tavola. Each country has its own definition for table wine.

        • red wine
          A wine made from dark-skinned grapes (red, purple, black, blue), which remains in contact with the grape skins (from which color is extracted) during fermentation. The pulp or flesh isn't generally red, the rare exceptions being teinturier grapes like alicante bouschet. blush and rosé wines are a lighter color because they're not kept in contact with the skins as long.
          • white wine
            Any wine that's made from light-skinned grapes or from dark-skinned grapes whose juice doesn't contain any extracted color (which happens when the juice is immediately separated from the grape skins, seeds, and pulp). A white wine's hue may range from almost no color to very pale yellow to golden yellow to amber. As white wines age, they tend to darken.
