Dear Friends:
It's been another busy and productive week at City Hall. After the long weekend, Councillors returned to work on Tuesday, for the meeting of Executive Committee. During the meeting, Executive Committee members supported a housing report that recommended the sale of 55 additional homes in the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) portfolio. The proceeds from these stand-alone homes will generate over $35 million of much-needed funds to repair our existing housing portfolio. In turn, this will help us provide TCHC residents with the quality of living they deserve.
Outside of committee, many Councillors weighed-in on how Section 37 and 45 funds should be negotiated and collected from new developments. Currently, Councillors who have high levels of development in their wards receive the greatest benefit, as they are able to generate large sums of money that can be allocated to future projects in their wards. This creates an imbalance and residents outside of wards with high development, do not benefit. It is my view that we must re-evaluate the current process to ensure the best deal for all Toronto residents.
Also, earlier this week there were reports about EMS paramedic staff opting not to take overtime work. This story has shed light on the action EMS management is taking to improve services by:
- Revising 35-year-old work schedules, to meet the needs of the year 2012;
- Hiring of 40 new paramedics; and
- Plans to hire part-time paramedics that can meet the demands of EMS during peak times.
On a closing note, I would like to urge everyone to vote for Toronto resident Jessie Munro on the reality TV show, "Over the Rainbow". She needs your support in her quest to become Dorothy in Andrew Lloyd Webber's production of the Wizard of OZ at the Ed Mirvish Theatre.
