It is penny wise to judge a war upon its cost only, without considering the consequence of no action. It is almost laughable if you apply the same logic to American role in WWII.

Because of the Iraqi War, there has been not terror attack against American interest for 10 years. Saddam had slaughtered hundreds thousands Iraqi people. Now he had been stopped. Iraq became the first democrat country in Arabic world. I will not be surprised if the “Arabic Spring” is inspired by the success in Iraq.

WWII was followed by Cold War. It took America about 40 years to win Cold War. It only took America about 8 years to win the conflict after Iraq War.

There were multiple intelligence sources suggested that Saddam was close to getting WMD and willing to give it to terrorists. Saddam had been defying UN resolution for years and just kicked out the UN inspectors. If you were the leader of America, were you wait till the WMD exploded on US soil again? Criticizing bearing no responsibility is easy. Criticizing afterwords is even cheaper.

    The war in Iraq cost money (800 billion and counting), American lives (4500), and more than 100,000 Iraqi causalities (most of them civilians). It cost US the moral high ground after 9/11 and the International political leadership. By looking at the composition of coalition army, it was not that hard to see the unity behind US was gone by that point - even Canada did not send ground troops. A piss off to Bush of course. A war without a post war strategy, a war based on false intelligence, a war decried by most Americans towards the end, a war cost thousands of American lives and hundreds of thousands innocent civilian lives, can hardly be justified.. If the goal was for the oil, as many people pointed it out, the verdict of history on his Presidency can hardly be a good one.
