March 6th, 2010 · No Comments

Starting March 1, 2010, the U.S. State Department, which oversees all U.S. Embassies and Consulates, started rolling out the new DS-160 non-immigrant visa application form. This form will supercede all three of the current forms, DS-156, DS-157 and DS-158. This transition has been fueled by the U.S. government’s efforts to streamline the visa application process, reduce the use of paper, and implement new technologies to assist agencies in managing workloads.

For this purpose, the State Department has created a new website for its new “Consular Electronic Application Center”, which will guide a would-be visa applicant in a online wizard-format questionnaire. The online form will actually allow you to save your progress and go back and complete it later. (it is strongly recommended to save the in-progress application frequently!)

A significant change or feature of the new DS-160 form is the requirement for the applicant to upload his/her own digital passport photograph, a process which until now was only utilized in the State Department’s annual Diversity Lottery system.

Upon successfully completing and electronically submitting (i.e. “filing”) the form, the applicant will instantly receive a receipt notification which must be printed out and brought along to the scheduled visa interview appointment at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate.

Depending on what visa is being applied for, additional forms and supporting documents will still be required at the Visa interview, as has already been the case. Please note that the online filing of the DS-160 form does NOT automatically schedule an applicant for his/her visa interview. This is still a separate, extra step, just like the payment of the visa fee (MRV-fee).

While the State Department has acknowledged some initial systemic problems, Applicants are encouraged to complete the new DS-160 any time after March 1, and also check with specific visa instructions on the respective U.S. consulate’s website for any updates and/or further instructions.

The increased availability of foreign languages editions of form DS-160 can be expected over the next coming months, as the State Department continues its roll-out of this new measure among its posts.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
