"Go ahead. Make my day." A statement, spoken with conviction, determination and meaning. Most actors would kill for that line. But only one man gave it sting: Dirty Harry.

Also know as the lean, mean Clint Eastwodd, he keeps busy as an actor, composer, director, musician, politician and producer--all this, at the tender age of 70. Still charming and vital, Clint (and there is jus tno other name for him) could walk into any room and go home with the most nubille hottie there. For that matter, the current Mrs Eastwood is 35 years his junior.

In the same way, an ice-cool Paul newman could believably, on screen, seduce the likes of Linda Fiorentino, while Sean Connery, womaniser james Bond air still lingering, can lisp his way into tthe heart of Catherine Zeta-Jones. Only a man like Clark Gable could frankly, my dear, not give a damn. And it's the reason why Warren Beatty can do what he will with, well, just about anyone.

Textbook examples? Errol Flynn, silver screen's best-loved swashbuckler (till this day). Earning himself the title of "Charming Rogue" in his time, he was a wild child in both real and rell life. Trotting in and out of trouble for quaffing vodka and morphine, and yielding to his soft spot for young woman, his partying came to a head in 1942, when he was charged with the statutory rape of two juvenile delinguents. yet the moustachioed Flynn emerged smiling. Not only were chareges eventually dropped because of technicalities, his career soared as a result of the scandal--sealing his popularity with female fans.

Go figure. Call it panache, callit manliness, but they can come over and visit anytime. The key? Well, the likes of Flynn & Co. are part of an mysterious species called hollywood's Real men--endangered these days, no matter what pretenders to the title claim. Youth and good looks do not a real man make. Instead, this breed embodies allthings women got hot and bothered over, and men dream of having. Better than having the Aemrican Express Black Card, it's a privilege that unlocks many doors from madonna's to Carol lombard's.

It has even let Beatty, after years of being the world's most famous playboy, get away with the line: "For me, the highest level of sexual excitement is in a monogamous relatinsip."

They make it look easy, but it's a tough job. Hollywood's real men tread a fine line. Too well dressed, and you have Falph Fiennes, too scruffy, and you'are Nicolas Cage. Too greasy, and you have jack Nicholson; too pretty, Brad Pitt. Adam Sandler is too goofy, while Leonardo DiCaprio, too moody. Too beefy, Sylvester Stallone, and worse of all, too wholesome, Tom Hanks.

Of course, most men would love to know how to obtain that privilege, how to achieve the delicate balance between being a men's man and a ladies' man. But it's tricky, and limited to a very slect, classy, elite few.

Chosen ones must fulfil the following criteria: a) must charm women, b) have both knock-out smile and killer gaze, c)display the coolness of an ice-pick, d) be able to star in really bad movies and have people still love you, and e) have that X-factor that Matt Damon, bless his cute face, will never have. Above all, he must ooze testosterone. He's got to be all man, with a capital M.

In fact, short-listed candidated--short being the key word--are few and far between. Among them, slickers like Samuel L Jacson, Chow Yun-Fat, Russell Crowe, harrison Ford, Bruce Willis, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, and yes, the inimitable Mad Max, Mel Gibson.

Clooney, for instance, might have had a slight genetic head start with singer Rosemary Clooney for an aunt and boradcast journalist Nick Clonney as a father. Even so, it wasn't until he broke into his plum role in 1994 as paediatrician Dr. Doug Ross on television series ER that he also acquired an essential male-ness, and a soulful bedside manner that made him an official dreamboat.

At 39, things have just begun for him. Tailor-made for turn-of-the-century stardom, he is casually handsome (patented Caesar cut), has a magnetic personality, and fills the big screen. Not quite as wild as predecessors like flynn, he does act like the actually owns the set. Explaining how he'd turned up at one autition with a six-pack of beer in hand, he ssaid: "The best actor never gets the job. You get the job when you walk in the door. We're not selling acting. what we're selling is confidence."

Overflowing with this attitude, Clooney's managed to play everything from vampire to maverick colonel, Batman to war opportunist--and still have People magazine bequeath his its "sexiest Man Alive" title. Even without the title, which he abdicated, with his macho roles in The Thin Red Line, and Better yet, Three Kings, Clooney has chiselled his features among Hollywood's real men.

Then, of course, there is Mel Gibson, who was raised t become Australia's most popular export since Masters' milk. Being sixth in the line of this parents' 11 children, he had to do something to get attention, especially after the family relocated from the US to his mother's native country. Thankfully eschewing earlier career inclinations to become either a chef or journalist, Gibson instead turned his attention to the movies, debuting in the low-budget Summer City, as a surfer dude named Scollop.

It wasn't until mad max that he became recognised as a bona fide muchacho. The night before his audition for the role, the twitchy-faced hero had received a beatin gin a brawl that lfet his face swollen and stitched "like a busted grapefruit". He clinched the role, and followed up with action roles from The Road Warrior to The Raonson, Coincidentally, he also was named People's "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1985--the magazine's first ever.

Today, despite having played serious roles in hamlet and The Man Without A Face, and more recently, in historical pulp like Braveheart and The Patriot, he is still best loved in a role that did for him what the Indiana Jones trilogy did for Harrison Ford.

Playing a half-crazed, suicidal cop with a loose shoulder socket in the Lethal Weaon series--complete with the oh-so-fashionable shoulder-length curls of the time, and famed butt shot that was no body double--he sent a collective sigh across international borders. And why not? He was, and stil is, spectacularly cute. (Bonus points for his unruly style and wicked smile.) Be it playing a murder-minded professional thief seekink revenge against his unfaithful wife in payback, or voicing a brash American rosster maned Rocky in poultry homage Chicken Run, there is no doubt that audiences will forgive him.

Ah well, who cares. It's Mel, after all, and like the best of his peers and those who have gone before him, he's one of those speical men. The Real Men.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
