But to many parents' great disappointment, their kids grow to be strangers, to be more and more distant from whatever their parents hope or wish for... they tend to dislike anything their parents cherish: values, cultural practices, life style..
Yet from the past years' Rolia gala, I have been happy and touched to see all the teenagers, who are not only talented, but respectful, cooperative and proud of their Chinese roots...
I have been in Canada for a while. I couldn't help but notice children of immigrants of so many different cultural backgrounds having so much disgust and disapproval of things their parents value. In the end, the original idea of immigrating to a better place for the sake of their kids' better future turns out to be just the opposite: losing them, or seeing them drifting farther and farther away from their culture, the material that is basic of everyone...
I pray that you guys will continue to be willing to be part of what your grandparents, parents are fond of, and then pass this pride and fondness on to your children. It is not a narrow nationalistic pride or love, but, like your look, it is part of you.
