Accounting programs at Seneca College

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Seneca offers 6 Fulltime Accounting programs. Wow! How come there are so many programs of the same field?
1)Accounting (ACC 4 semesters) Ontario College Diploma
2)Accounting and Finance (ACF 6 semesters) Ontario College Advanced Diploma
3)Bachelor of Applied Business – International Accounting and Finance (IAF 8 semesters) Bachelor of Applied Business Degree
4)Business Administration – Accounting and Financial Planning (AFP 6 semesters) Ontario College Advanced Diploma
5)Professional Accounting Practice ( PRA 3 semesters) Ontario College Graduate Certificate
6)Accounting and Information Technology (AIT 2 semesters) Ontario College Graduate Certificate

What is so unique about each program?

Program 1) Students choose to attend the ACC program have the intention of graduating 1 year earlier than other students. This program emphasize on the usage of computers and accounting software. It also has standalone career preparation and ethic courses. Knowledge gained from those courses is very beneficial when looking for work.

However, if graduates of the ACC program decides to pursue higher understanding of the accounting field, most courses in this program aren’t recognized by C.G.A. of Ontario. Mitigation for this consequence: students in the ACC program should transfer all their credits to the Faculty of Continuing Education (FCE) before starting semester 3. Now that you are officially a Part Time (PT) student, by further completion of 10 or less courses, you will be granted the ACC diploma from FCE. It’s equivalent to Day time’s (DT) ACC diploma; however, students can’t enjoy the benefits provided by the DT ACC program (no ethic course, career preparation course and less computer and accounting software usage). You do get around 9 CGA credits with this alternative; whereas you would receive only 2-3 CGA credits if you stayed in the DT ACC program.

Program 2) ACF is a 3-year program which introduces more theory in the world of accounting. Most courses in this program are CGA recognized. By completing this program and achieving the grade of “B” or higher in select courses, you received the equivalency of CGA level three (11 credits). Some of the level four courses (FA4, TX1 and AU1) can be challenged. The purpose of the final year of this program emphasize on the concept of integration. Some of the courses are case-study based and students must apply knowledge they gained from prior years (that is the time when I said “ahh crap, I shouldn’t have sold my old books”). This program is excellence in preparing students to further their studies through University, CGA or other Seneca programs (AIT & IAF).

Potential drawback for this program is that 7 courses in the final year are not CGA accredited. For example, some courses are CGA level 4 courses; however, CGA won’t grant them direct transfer credits. You have to challenge those courses in order to obtain CGA credits; as a result, you will be repeating some of the topics learned in the program.

Program 3) Bachelor’s degree, what more can I say? By completing this program, you have satisfied the degree requirement for the CGA program and other designations (CA and CMA). You should be placed directly to CGA’s PACE level. It also has a mandatory paid co-op term.

Few disadvantages: 1) Tuition for this program is very high. It’s equivalent to University tuition or may be slightly higher; however, the admission standard is lower than University but higher than diploma programs. 2) The data posted on CA Ontario and CMA Ontario websites indicated that Applied Degrees granted from Community Colleges will be assessed on a case-by-case base. They will recognize the credits only if a University are willing to grant advanced standing. I guess Applied Degrees in Ontario haven’t received the same credentials as they are in Alberta.

Program 4) Business Administration - Accounting and Financial Planning, the name says it all. Remember that 7 courses in the ACF program aren’t CGA recognized? Well, in this program, those courses were replaced by Certified Financial Planner (CFP) accredited courses. CFP is a recognized professional financial planner designation. Students in this program may choose to complete all CFP’s academic requirements OR all of CGA level three courses. However, there are no obstacles stopping students from pursuing both (CFP & CGA level 3). During semester 5 students simply follow the Finance stream, and register an extra course (CGA accredited course) either through Full or Part time. Repeat this step for semester 6. You will be at CGA level 3 and have completed all of CFP’s academic requirements upon graduation.

Program 5) what do you get in 3 semesters? You get all of CGA level 3 credits (11 credits). WOW amazing, only 3 semesters; not quite, admission to this program is a recognized University/College diploma or degree. Students may complete this program in 1 calendar year (Fall, Winter and Summer semesters). Tuition for this program is currently not disclosed, if it’s not distinguished, it may indicate that the fee is similar as regular diploma. However, this program is a Graduate Certificate; the fee should be equivalent to University courses. This mystery remains unsolved.

Program 6) This program contains 2 main features, 1 half of the program consists of CGA level 4 courses, the other half possesses courses from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Polytechnic. Students in this program are earning CGA level 4 direct transfer credits and degree credits recognized by SAIT. Admission to this program is a University/College diploma or degree with completion of CGA level 3 or equivalent. Graduates of ACF, AFP and PRA are eligible to apply. University Tuition applies.

Note: IAF and PRA are new programs at Seneca College; official transfer policy from the CGA website isn’t available. New transfer policies contain these 2 new programs will be made available in the near future.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
